The notion that wanderlust ceases once you turn 50 is alien to us. In fact,
we think that’s when trips are at their finest.
When the whole world is your oyster, it can be pretty difficult to decide on somewhere to go. Here, you’ll find our top ten travel destinations for those that are in search of some of the finer things in life.
Portmeirion
If you manage to catch Portmeirion on a blissfully sunny day, you can almost forgive yourself for mistaking your surroundings for somewhere in Italy. This gorgeous village sits in North Wales, and is just a stone’s throw from Llandudno – a sweet beach town. Rail fans will love The Conwy Valley Line, too.
London’s West End
Most people will have been to the British capital to see a show at some point in their lives, but right now, the West End is bursting at the seams with new shows and talent. There’s never been a better time to go. From the new stage production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to War Horse and The Lion King, there’s plenty of London theatre to see – as well as the rest of London to explore.
The Scottish Highlands
From scenic views to shortbread, the Scottish Highlands are everyone’s cup of tea. Fort William, Mallaig, Kyle of Lochalsh – there are some utterly awe-inspiring and charming places in the Scottish Highlands. Fancy doing them a little differently? You could even take a steam-hauled trip on the Strathspey Railway.
Lake Garda
A beautiful part of Italy, Lake Garda and its surrounding areas are only part of the charm of a visit to this lake region. Expect incredible food, friendly locals, and fascinating horticulture in the olive and citrus tree groves that grow on the edge of the surrounding mountains.
Prague, Budapest and Vienna.
It’s fair to say that these could all be on this list in their own right, but as it’s so easy to get between all three cities, we thought we’d let these three share a spot. The Czech Republic, Hungarian and Austrian cities have all got a historic charm that simply exudes culture. Enjoy coffee in Prague’s Old Town, take scenic shots over the Danube and meander through museums in Budapest.
Portugal
An inspiring country on the Algarve, Portugal regularly appears on ‘must-visit’ lists – and that’s in no small part thanks to its rugged coastline, dramatic mountain scenery and its quaint historic villages. Oporto, Viana do Castelo and Valenca are all places that should be explored in this fascinating country.
Paris and Monet’s Gardens
When you think of Paris, it’s impossible to not conjure up images of the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysees and of the Louvre’s iconic glass pyramids. These are all famous Parisian landmarks, of course, but it’s Monet’s Gardens that we consider a must-see when in the French capital. Hosted in Giverny, the former home of Monet, you can wander around the lily pond itself – it very much feels like you’ve walked into one of his impressionist works.
Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
All sitting on the stunning Neapolitan Riviera, Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast combine everything that’s adored about this part of Italy – coastlines, fascinating history and perfectly proportioned port towns. An ideal cluster of places to visit if you really fancy getting a taste of Southern Italy.
Memphis, New Orleans and Nashville.
Let’s head over the pond for a moment, and look at Elvis’ home town and some other parts of the southern states. The bustling city of Memphis, unbelievable New Orleans and Nashville – what many call the home of country music – are ideal holiday locations. Journey across the stunning Alabama countryside to see all the region has to offer.
Carcassonne, Avignon and Provence.
It’s nearly impossible to order these destinations in a list – they are all equally worth visiting in our eyes. Our favourite locations of the moment are the stunning areas of Carcassonne, Avignon and Provence. Explore old fortress towns, cruise along the Canal du Midi and visit the beautiful Avignon, all in the Provence region of France.

More and more older people than ever before are taking escorted touring holidays, with farther flung corners of Britain and Ireland, Italy, the USA and Canada and India being amongst the most popular. The move away from conventional ‘one-stop’ holidays is more pronounced than ever amongst this age group, as they look to ‘tick-off’ places.
