So the 90th Birthday celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II have begun today. She will no doubt receive countless gifts from Heads of State from around the world. But just what do you give to your Granny for her 90th when she is the Queen?

It is enough of a dilemma when your Granny isn’t Queen of not only the United Kingdom but also Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and Head of the Commonwealth. (She is also Queen of 12 countries that have become independent since her accession: Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. source Wikipedia)

Online Gift Ideas

If you search online for inspirational 90th birthday gifts, you will be advised that a compilation of all of the front pages of a national daily newspaper would be a unique and personal gift which would be a great idea if your recipient hadn’t actually been on the front page of a national newspaper every year of their life!

Something Home-Made

We learn today that Grand-daughter-in-law Kate made the Queen a pot of home made chutney as a Christmas gift so perhaps she will present Her Majesty with some more of her home made fare?  It is unlikely to be a cake though as that honour has gone to Nadiya Hussain winner of the Great British Bake Off.

Another online suggestion for a 90 year old Grandmother was to give her a personalised Jewellery box.  Considering that Queen Elizabeth keeps the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and the Royal Collection numbers some 300 pieces which is kept under close guard, perhaps her grandchildren should keep looking…

Gift an Experience

As the Queen is patron of some 600 charities and organisations, sponsoring a charity or an animal seems like a bit of a daft idea.  So what about the gift of ‘an experience’ which is quite popular these days?  I took a look at Virgin Experience Days, (though they stop making suggestions for gifts after 70!) and I immediately rejected  the ‘Visit to The Queen’s Gallery’ day out idea, along with all of the Thames River Cruises on offer..(she last went down the Thames in the pouring rain for her Diamond Jubilee). In fact there really was nothing there that the Queen hasn’t previously often experienced. She really has Been there Done that and I expect has already been Bought all of the T-shirts!

We will undoubtedly be able to read all about it over the coming weeks and there is bound to be mention somewhere of the official gifts received, but we may never know what that particular family give to their beloved grandmother on her birthday.
