You might know Fifty Shades for its steamy love scenes, young Hollywood starlets and glitzy soundtrack; but what about these 10 shades of grey? Yes, we mean the 50-somethings wearing their grey on the outside – with pride, flair and just a touch of sparkle.
It’s not just men who can rock the silver fox look; many women in their 50s choose not to dye their roots and are happy rocking their shiny grey locks. Here’s a handful of our favourite over-50s showing that you really can grow old with grace, grey and glamour. And sex appeal.
Jamie Lee Curtis (pictured)
Jamie Lee Curtis has accepted the ageing process in such a beautiful, natural way. The Hollywood actress hasn’t dyed her hair since 2000 (that’s 15 years) and is proud of her silver locks. She says the choice has cost her roles in films, but ultimately industry professionals have respected her chic, modern look. This 56-year-old is proving grey is beautiful.
Barack Obama
You can’t not put the Ex President in there. Not only a super-cool singer, Obama has let his grey creep in with pride. The Ex President’s hair didn’t have its greyish tint when he was first elected in 2008 – but doting wife Michelle Obama claims that it’s his children, not his job, that have made him go grey.
John Slattery
The Mad Men actor once had brown curly hair – but he went grey in his twenties and we think this suits him much better. Slattery plays a founding partner of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. He was originally asked to read for the part of Don Draper, but apparently it was a ploy. Though he claims to dye his hair when he’s not swamped with filming, we much prefer him as a silver fox.
Glenn Close
The Oscar nominee stopped dyeing her hair blonde in 2012 and now rocks beautiful, layered silver hair on film sets and red carpets alike. At 67 years old, the Hollywood actress is still full of spirit – she was in five films in 2014. It’s easier to maintain the look and quality of grey hair when it’s cut shorter, although Close proves that a few shorter, whispier parts at the front can frame the face, allowing you to grow it long without looking too thin and fragile.
George Clooney
Clooney is adored by women everywhere – young and old – and no doubt his silver fox looks have something to do with it. We noticed the salt and pepper flicks in his hair towards the end of his role in ER as Dr Doug Ross; he embraced the look, and maintained the silvery glow in Ocean’s Eleven and The Perfect Storm. Clooney proves that there’s no reason to hide your grey hair – especially when it looks this good.
Annie Lennox
Annie Lennox has been embracing the silver look for years. And why wouldn’t she? It looks hot! The Scottish musician and political activist tends to keep her hair short, but still likes to shake things up a bit. She flits from vibrant red or orange hair to stylish white and is the queen of reinvention.
Pierce Brosnan
Don’t even get us started on Pierce Brosnan. The hair, the accent, the beard – it all just works. Brosnan’s style is keep the hair short on the back and sides, and longer on top. The easiest way to recreate this at home is by blow-drying the crown of your head first, and comb the back and side with a wide-toothed comb until it’s completely dry. That way you’ll keep the volume on the top.
Antonio Banderas
The 55-year-old actor likes to keep his hair razor sharp. His style is never longer than one centimetre all over, with minimal fuss and frizz. Banderas’ step-daughter Dakota Johnson is in the new Fifty Shades of Grey movie, and he says he is very proud.
Alec Baldwin
It was a long time coming, but eventually the popular actor gave in. Baldwin chose to embrace his natural look at the end of filming TV show 30 Rock. He allowed his grey roots to show in 2013, and hasn’t looked back. We like the silver-grey look on him, and think it compliments his boyish good looks.
Tilda Swinton
This British Academy Award-winning actress is rocking a white look for the NARS cosmetics campaign and is widely regarded as one of the coolest actors in showbiz. The London actress, who is 54, likes to keep her hair short, which really brings out the features in her face.
