Employment support service Resource is responding to increased demand from the over-50s by launching “The Ageless Job Search”, designed to tackle age-related barriers in the workplace.

The Jewish Chronicle reports that Chief Executive Victoria Sterman says the charity is currently assisting 50 people in that age group and has “records on our database of 750 clients over the age of 55 who have successfully secured employment in recent years with our support”. Some of their stories will be shown on video at a morning workshop at JW3 on January 17, at which Baroness Altmann will speak on the value of older workers.

Ms Sterman said a number of older Resource clients had reported “unfortunate work-search experiences.  Although we now have laws designed to prevent age discrimination in the workplace, those of a certain age know only too well it still exists, albeit often tacitly.”

Their desire to gain employment often stemmed from financial necessity. “But a lot of people just want to work. They need a purpose and volunteering doesn’t cut it for them. “We helped a 79-year-old lady find a job as a radiographer.”

Some over-50s complained that they were routinely overlooked by employers in favour of younger candidates, or were considered only for admin roles.

“But there are employers who are very receptive towards applications from older people,” Ms Sterman said. “It’s about state of mind, positive reinforcement and a sharpening of tools.”

One of the ways Resource can help older job-seekers is by assisting in compiling an “ageless CV, one that looks modern with things removed that obviously date people”.
