Top 15 destinations the over 50s would most like to visit
Desperate to escape Britain’s miserable weather a growing number of over-50s are seeking brighter shores in far-flung destinations across the globe. A new study has found the most lust after trips.
The Express reports that sadly nine out of ten Brits regret not travelling more with loved ones when they were younger, however, over-50s are proving its never too late with many jetting to all four corners of the globe. The tropical paradise of the Seychelles is now the number one destination for over 50s followed by Maldives and the USA. Over three quarters (76 per cent) have vowed to explore foreign countries including culturally rich Cuba, and the Far East climates of China and Japan.
The study, conducted by over 50s insurance specialist Staysure, revealed the main obstacle holding sun-seekers back from fulfilling their travel dreams were expenses (52 per cent), family commitments (16 per cent), and health concerns (10 per cent). But for those that make the voyage, immersing themselves in local culture was the most popular activity with 86 per cent enjoying sight-seeing and visiting museums and galleries. For the majority a trip abroad is valuable time spent with their partner, though an increasing number (15 per cent) hop off on holiday with friends, while seven per cent are happy to go it alone.

The research also found that seven out of ten (71 per cent) of over 50s are inspired to visit a holiday destination after they’ve seen it on the big screen. Smash hit movies such as Exotic Marigold Hotel, filmed in India and Mamma Mia set in Greece have enticed travellers to their idyllic scenery. Staysure CEO Ryan Howsam, said: “The research shows that a growing number of over 50s are choosing to live abroad and visit all corners of the world. They aren’t all just sitting on the beach either – they’re keen to discover local customs and cultures, make lifelong friends – and even fall in love. Many are choosing to go away with friends, or even go it alone, which can be an amazing experience for those who have never done it.”
“We’ve seen a huge growth in the number of customers taking out insurance policies for long-haul trips, although many who initially contact us don’t think they can get cover due to medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart conditions. Some feel their time long haul has passed them by – which simply isn’t true. With the pound getting stronger and a diversity of affordable travel options, there’s never been a better time to make that special trip.” he said.
